Lucy Lawless Hosts Saturday Night Live

begin whine
So when I found out that Lucy was going to be hosting SNL, I called a fellow Xenite friend of mine in NYC who knows everybody, and asked if she's got any connections to get SNL tickets.  She didn't even know that Lucy was scheduled to host, so she was very excited and said she'd see what she could do.  She called me back later and asked me to find out who the musical guest is supposed to be, since her connection is in the music industry and would have to take that tack.  After a lot of digging (gods forbid the SNL web site actually have any useful information on it, like upcoming guests and hosts :P) I found out it's Elliot Smith (yuck) and passed the info on.  Things were looking good.

Three days before the broadcast I got an e-mail from her saying "I'm so sorry, but my connection misunderstood me and only got one extra ticket, so looks like I'm going and you're not."  Oh, if I only had a chakram ... :P

I got over it, though.  I rationalized that if I were to go I'd miss the last train back home and I'd have no place to crash for the night, so it was for the best.  Really.  I mean, that way I could watch the broadcast in my jammies and roll into bed right after, right?  Sure.

Lucy rocked on SNL.  Overall I thought it was one of the better installments of the show in recent memory - I actually laughed out loud at some of the segments that didn't have Lucy in them, and believe me, laughing at something on SNL is a rarity for me.  It was nice to see that my impression that Lucy is a top-notch comic actress wasn't misplaced.  I was actually glad to hear her say on Conan (and also on ET) that after the Xena gig is over she'd like to go into comedy - she's be perfect for it.  I've said it before, and I'll say it again: she really could be the next Tracey Ullman.

So was the Judge Judy sketch the first time Lucy has shown her midriff in public? Forget about Gab's abs - I want to see more of Xena's abs!  Yow.  (I was wondering if the Judge Judy sketch didn't come from Lucy mentioning somewhere recently that she'd like to meet her - I'm not hallucinating that she said that, am I?)  Hands-down the best sketch was the Stevie Nicks one, though.  I was just about on the floor.
